The Derbyshire Dales sits on the quieter southern edge of Peak District country, all limestone valleys, stone-built villages, and old market towns, without the crowds that gather further north around the national park's best-known spots. It's a good fit for anyone who wants genuine countryside and a slower pace, with enough variety between reservoirs, trails, and small towns that a weekend never feels one-note.
Things to do
- Carsington Water: a large reservoir with a visitor centre, waterside walking and cycling trails of varying lengths, sailing, and an adventure playground. A good easy day whatever the weather, since the visitor centre has indoor activities too.
- The High Peak Trail: a flat, traffic-free former railway line passing Harborough Rocks and Black Rocks on its way to Wirksworth. Good for an easy walk or cycle at your own pace.
- Wirksworth: a small historic market town with independent shops, cafés, and a Tuesday market that's been running since a charter granted in 1306. Worth a slow wander rather than a tick-list visit.
- Dovedale and the Tissington Trail, near Ashbourne: a dramatic limestone gorge with the famous stepping stones across the River Dove, reachable via the flat, easy-going Tissington Trail if you'd rather keep the walk gentle.
- New Bath Hotel & Spa, Matlock Bath: a proper reset, with sauna, steam room, and a naturally warm, mineral-rich spring pool open to non-residents for a fee. A good half-day if you want to properly switch off rather than sightsee.
- Bradford Dale, Youlgreave: a gentle, shallow wild swimming spot on the River Bradford, with meadows alongside for lying out afterwards. Best visited outside peak weekend times.
Eating & essentials
- The Gate in Brassington is a good local pub, popular with walkers finishing a High Peak Trail loop.
- Wirksworth and Ashbourne have a wider range of everyday shops if you need to stock up.
- Parking in smaller villages like Brassington and Tissington is limited, so it's worth checking in advance where to leave a car if you're driving.
Getting there & getting around
- The nearest mainline station is Cromford, on the Derby to Matlock line, close to the High Peak Trail.
- Wirksworth also has its own heritage station on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, connecting to the mainline at Duffield.
- A car gives the most flexibility here, since much of the Derbyshire Dales has no direct rail link and bus services are limited outside main routes.
